Mechanical King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals Engineering Department ME 307 Machine Design I 1/3 Course Project (131) King Fahd University of Petroleum & MineralsCollege of Engineering SciencesMechanical Engineering Department ME 307: MACHINE DESIGN I Fall Semester (2013-2014) (131) Course Project Due date: Thursday, Nov 5, 2013 This design exercise will help you constructing a design methodology for a shaft as an example. You will need to support your decisions scientifically and/or through reasonable assumptions wherever needed. All dimensions are in mm. Width of bearings = 25 mm, width of the pulley = 30 mm, width of gear = 40 mm. What is expected from you? A final design report that has to include the following: 1. All alternative designs and the final design selection 2. For the final design, submit ? Drawings, ? Supporting analysis (get help from the design steps shown in the project), ? Bill of materials (including quantity needed and cost). 3. The report has to be clearly written and well organized. Project: Design a shaft for power transmission system as shown in the figure. Power is supplied by the motor to the shaft through the shaft gear and is then transmitted to two fans driven by pulleys A and B by means of flat belt. The shaft is supported by two deep groove ball bearings.
Mechanical King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals Engineering Department ME 307 Machine Design I 2/3 Course Project (131) ? The drive motor power is 15 kW and is rotating at 600 rpm. ? The gear, pulleys and bearings are supported by shoulders and held in place by retaining rings. ? The gear and pulley transmit power through keys. ? The tensions for the belt drive in Pulley A are TA1 = T1B = 200 N and TA2 = 1200 N. ? The motor gear transmits a resultant force to the shaft gear at a pressure angle of 20o gear i.e. ()?20tantrFF=. ? The width of both bearings is 25 mm. ? The width of the pulley is 30 mm whereas the width of the gear is 40 mm. ? A minimum design factor…
